Let’s be honest—comfort zones feel... well, comfortable. They’re cozy, predictable, and safe. Whether it’s sticking to your daily routine, staying in a job you’ve outgrown, or delaying the launch of your dream business because “the timing isn’t right”, we’ve all clung to our comfort zones at some point.
But here’s the thing: staying in your comfort zone might be the very thing holding you back. I learned this lesson firsthand when I did something that, for me, felt huge—I stepped back into a public gym after years of working out in the perfectly controlled bubble of my home.
Trust me, as a germaphobe, it wasn’t easy! But I pushed through the discomfort, and to my surprise, I found not just physical benefits but a renewed sense of confidence and growth. This got me thinking: how many women entrepreneurs are holding themselves back because stepping into the unknown feels scary? If you’re waiting to feel perfectly ready, to have every question answered, or to know exactly how things will turn out, let me save you some time: that day may never come.
The good news? You don’t have to navigate the unknown alone. And once you take that first step outside your comfort zone, you’ll discover the magic that happens when you challenge yourself. So, what’s your comfort zone costing you? And more importantly, are you ready to break free?
Let's dig a little deeper...
A few years ago, during the pandemic, my husband built gyms in both our summer and winter homes. It was perfect—safe, private, and germ-free. I loved working out in my controlled little bubble.
But recently, my husband and I started playing pickleball to mix up our routine. And while that was fun, we craved more variety. So, we rejoined our local gym. And you know what? It wasn’t as scary as I thought. Armed with my trusty Lysol wipes and gym bag, I faced my fear of public spaces and haven’t looked back since. We even joined a Spin competition to raise money for charity. It feels incredible to embrace a little discomfort and try something new. It’s a reminder that growth happens when you challenge yourself.
As an entrepreneur—or someone dreaming of leaving your 9-to-5 to start your business—your comfort zone might feel safe and cozy, but it could also be holding you back. Are you waiting for “the perfect time” to start? Hoping to feel 100% ready before you launch? Scared of failure or what others might think? If so, you’re not alone.
But here’s the truth: no one ever feels completely ready.
If I’d waited to feel ready before stepping back into the gym, I’d still be sitting at home, convincing myself that my gym setup was “enough.” And while it worked for a season, it wasn’t helping me grow.
The same is true for your business. You can read all the books, watch the webinars, and plan endlessly. But until you take action—real, sometimes uncomfortable action—you’ll stay exactly where you are.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is hard. And it’s even harder when you’re doing it alone.
As entrepreneurs, we often think we have to go it alone. After all, isn’t independence part of the dream? But the truth is, everyone needs support—especially when you’re chasing big goals.
Support comes in many forms, like:
✔️Someone to share the journey – Having a trusted companion (even if they’re virtual!) can make the ups and downs of entrepreneurship feel less daunting.
✔️ An accountability partner – Someone who checks in on your progress and holds you to your goals can be a game-changer.
✔️ A mentor who’s been in your shoes – Learning from someone who understands where you’re coming from can save you time, energy, and frustration.
✔️ A guide who’s where you want to be – Seeing what’s possible can inspire you to push past your fears and aim higher.
When I joined the gym, I didn’t just walk in solo and wing it. My husband and I made the decision together, we leaned on each other for motivation, and we committed to showing up even when it felt uncomfortable.
The same principle applies to your business. Whether it’s hiring a coach, joining a mastermind, or simply connecting with a like-minded friend, having the right support can make all the difference.
Let’s talk about fear. Fear gets a bad rap, but it’s not inherently bad. Fear can be a powerful motivator. The key is not letting it paralyze you.
When I walked into the gym for the first time in years, my mind raced with “what ifs.” What if the equipment wasn’t clean? What if I got sick? What if I didn’t enjoy it?
But I didn’t let those thoughts stop me. I acknowledged the fear, packed my wipes, and walked in anyway. The same goes for your business.
What if your idea flops? What if people criticize you? What if you make mistakes?
Spoiler alert: you probably will make mistakes. And that’s okay. Because every misstep brings you closer to success.
Fear doesn’t mean you’re not ready—it means you’re human.
The real enemy isn’t fear; it’s letting that fear keep you stuck in the same place.
As the year comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on where you are and where you want to be.
What’s one thing you’ve been putting off because it feels too uncomfortable? Starting your business? Launching your first product? Reaching out to potential clients?
Whatever it is, I encourage you to take that first step now. Remember Neale D. Walsch’s words: “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” The good news? You don’t have to take that step alone.
To help you take that first step, here are a few actionable tips and resources:
The idea of overhauling your life or business in one go can be downright overwhelming. And guess what? You don’t have to! Big dreams are built on small, intentional steps. Think about one action that feels just a little outside your comfort zone but still within reach. Maybe it’s posting your first social media video—yes, the one where you worry about sounding awkward but end up sounding relatable instead. Or it could be reaching out to a potential collaborator with that idea you’ve been mulling over. Even jotting down your business idea on paper (or in a fancy digital notebook) is a great start.
The key? Start. Don’t wait for a grand plan to come together or for the stars to align perfectly. That first small step is what sets everything in motion. Remember: a baby step is still a step forward!
Stepping outside your comfort zone deserves more than just a mental “good job.” It’s time to celebrate those little victories like they’re the big deal they are! Whether you nailed a pitch, pressed “publish” on a blog post, or even just started brainstorming your brand name, write it down and own it.
Keep a “wins journal”—a dedicated space where you can log every small success. Why? Because progress has a funny way of sneaking up on you, and when doubt tries to creep in, this journal will remind you of just how far you’ve come. Plus, let’s face it: we could all use a confidence boost now and then.
Not into journaling? No problem. Reward yourself with something tangible—a solo coffee date, a walk in the park, or even a celebratory dance break. Whatever feels good to you, do it. Tracking and celebrating your wins will keep you energized and motivated for the next challenge.
Success is so much sweeter (and easier) when you have a solid support system by your side. That’s why finding your tribe is non-negotiable. These are the people who will cheer for you, encourage you, and remind you to keep going when the going gets tough.
Your tribe might be a group of like-minded entrepreneurs in an online community, a local networking circle that meets over coffee and pastries, or even an accountability partner who checks in weekly to keep you on track. Wherever you find them, these are the people who make the entrepreneurial journey less lonely and a lot more fun.
Still searching for your tribe? Don’t overthink it—start where you are. Join a mastermind group, attend a business event, or hop into a Facebook or LinkedIn group for entrepreneurs in your niche. And if you need a tribe with serious resources and guidance, my Startup Program is here to help.
Here’s a truth bomb: you are your greatest asset. Whether it’s your skills, knowledge, mindset, or energy, these are the tools that will drive your success. And the best way to sharpen those tools? Invest in yourself.
That investment might look like signing up for a course to learn something new, hiring a coach to guide you through the rough patches, or even carving out time to read a book that inspires you. It doesn’t always have to be financial—your time and energy are just as valuable.
Think of it like planting seeds in a garden. The more care and attention you give to your growth, the stronger and more resilient your “business garden” will be. So go ahead: take that leap, commit to learning, and trust that every bit of effort you put in will come back to you tenfold.
And remember, investing in yourself isn’t selfish—it’s strategic. When you grow, your business grows. When you thrive, the people around you (family, clients, community) benefit too. You’re not just worth the investment—you are the investment. So don’t skimp on yourself, okay?
ear has a way of showing up just when you’re about to take a big step forward. It whispers all those “what ifs” in your ear: What if I fail? What if people don’t get it? What if I’m not good enough? But here’s the secret to quieting those doubts—focus on your “why.”
Your “why” is your motivation, the guiding light that keeps you moving forward even when things feel uncertain. It’s the big picture, the reason you started dreaming in the first place. Is it to create a life where you can spend more time with your kids? To finally leave behind that 9-to-5 grind and do work that lights you up? Or maybe it’s to build something meaningful that serves others and leaves a legacy.
Whatever your “why” is, write it down and keep it visible. Tape it to your bathroom mirror, make it your phone wallpaper, or stick it on a Post-it next to your laptop. When fear shows up (and trust me, it will), your “why” will remind you what’s at stake and why pushing through the discomfort is worth it.
And let’s be real—your journey isn’t just about you. Maybe you’re doing this for your family, your community, or the clients you know you’re meant to serve. Keeping them in mind can give you that extra push when you feel like throwing in the towel.
When the going gets tough, close your eyes and picture the life you’re working toward. Feel the pride, joy, and freedom that come with building something you believe in. That’s your “why,” and it’s more powerful than fear will ever be.
So the next time self-doubt creeps in, remind yourself of this: You’ve got a reason that’s bigger than your fear. And that reason is more than enough to keep you moving forward.

Stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t easy, but it’s where the magic happens. Whether it’s walking into a gym for the first time in years or finally starting that business you’ve been dreaming of, the first step is always the hardest. But once you take it, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.
So grab your metaphorical Lysol wipes, take a deep breath, and go for it. You’ve got this. And if you’re ready for guidance and support on your entrepreneurial journey, don’t wait—join the Startup Program before it closes. Let’s build the business and life you love, together.
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Are you ready to step outside yours?
